Hurts So Good…

I found myself laying on the couch late one night watching TV thinking, “Ok…I need to make a change…no excuses this time!”  I had steadily gained weight for the last 3 years, was feeling tired and unmotivated all the time, and felt just plain unhealthy.  A Kosama radio ad I heard earlier in the week prompted me to ask a few people at work about their Kosama experiences.  So, without hesitation…or enough time to pass for me to change my mind, I rolled off the couch, turned on my computer and registered for the next Kosama session.  As I look back, that was the best decision I made in 2011.  My journey to a healthier lifestyle has begun…

I have always considered myself somewhat of an athlete.  I’ve mastered the elliptical machine, taken several exercise classes offered at work…so, I was thinking, “How hard could this be, right?”  After my very first session – Plyo – I thought my lungs were going to fall out of my chest.  As I was struggling for air, I could hear Leslie, my Coach, saying, “Keep your head above your heart, so you don’t pass out!”  Lifting the Kettle bell in the first upper body class felt OK…that is until the next day when I couldn’t move my arms…then came Kickboxing, Kettle bells and lower body class.  By the end of the first week, I couldn’t move, walk or hardly sit down without pain – but it’s that “good” kind of pain, right?  Or, at least that is what I was trying to tell myself as I was thinking, “What the heck did I get myself into…”

Since you can’t survive Kosama without drinking large quantities of water, I started replacing my ever-so-loved Diet Coke with water, started to figure out that large gooey frosted sugar cookie wasn’t worth the time it takes to burn off in class, and loaded up on protein as instructed by my Coach.  I started telling my friends and family about Kosama and the healthier choices I was making outside of class in order to keep me accountable for my actions.  Slowly, my body was starting to change…I was feeling stronger, more energized and healthier every week…

Fifteen weeks into my Kosama adventure, I have lost several inches and several pounds…and it feels GREAT!  I’ve gained confidence that I had lost and look forward to buying new clothes as my body continues to change.  But more importantly, I have found something that works for me.  And, in the process, I found a great group of people with common interests and goals of living a healthier lifestyle.  I think a comment from my 12 year old son sums up my adventure so far.  He said, “Mom, are you going to continue with your exercise class?”  I said, “Yes, why?”  He responded, “…because you just seem so much happier…”
